Break dance battles are interesting dimension in B-boy fashion. It is part of their identity. This is a passion for youths to win a break dancing battles. Winning a title of championship is a prestigious honour for them.
One of the main features of Break Dancing is the break dance battles that are staged. The combatants fight each other on the floor without physical contact. They stand in a circle and by rotation show off their skills in the field of style, complexity of move or difficult steps. Generally the rivals are two opposing dancing crews. Here are the names of some of the notable groups - Zulu Nation, Rock Steady Crew, Style Elements, Furious Styles Crew, Ichigeki, Team OHH, Fireworks, Havikoro, The Furious Five, Air force Crew etc. Even you can find little break dancing troupes in almost under-grad colleges in Europe and America.
Nowadays these break dance battles are part of the Break Dance events. The combat is more or less like a tournament with cash and prizes as rewards. Each crew is paid to dance. However often battles break out on the spur of the moment between rival groups - an event which is not without its attraction.
The largest competition, BOTY or Battle of the Year, is being observed in Germany since 1990 in which groups from all over the world participate. The spotlight is on choreographed routines. The presiding judge grades the performances and accordingly the winners are ranked up to the 4th place. Of late the winners have been from Hungary, Korea, France and Germany. Although previously USA had also ranked among the winners but of late they have had to lose ground. This is because they concentrate mostly on Break dance battles rather than routine steps. Nevertheless it is a good indication how American folk art has caught the imagination of rest of the world.
